Fonthill/Pelham
Named after an ancient Abbey in England, Fonthill is a thriving community within the Niagara Municipality known as Pelham. It has a few small industries but is primarily a residential suburb known for its upscale homes and community spirit. As a bedroom community, most residents commute to Welland, St. Catharines and some as far as Hamilton and Toronto daily for work.
On June 10, 2006 Fonthill celebrated its 150th anniversary. The celebration was marked by the opening of the band stand (a replica of the original band stand the existed in the early 1900s), historical displays and a variety of musical and artistic presentations.
The town is nestled securely into a quiet hillside known as the Fonthill Kame, formed by glacial deposits. On a clear day, the tall buildings of Niagara Falls to the East and Toronto to the North are clearly visible. These same ancient glaciers blessed the surrounding Pelham countryside with rolling scenery best viewed from Lookout Point, the highest peak on the escarpment -two Great lakes, miles of vineyards, fruit orchards, villages and towns are spread out below like a giant patchwork quilt.
Pelham is also home to the smaller village communities of Fenwick, Ridgeville, North Pelham and Effingham. The Comfort Maple Tree which is estimated to be Canada's largest Sugar Maple tree (approximately 500 years old) is located in the community of North Pelham. Named after the Comfort family on whose land the tree once stood, it has been designated a Conservation site for its biological and historical significance.
